Can I Claim an NHS-Funded Home Test?
To claim NHS funding towards your home eye examination, there are two criteria that you need to fulfil. The first is that you would normally claim an NHS-funded examination if you were to go into an optician’s practice - if you’re over sixty, then you would be able to claim, and you can find a full list of reasons here.
The second of the criteria is that you can’t get out to an optician without assistance, due to a health reason. This can be for many different reasons, but here are some examples for clarification of whether you can claim or not.
“I have arthritis and find it difficult to walk to the optician.”
You would qualify for an NHS-funded home examination.
“I suffer from anxiety and find leaving the house difficult on my own”
You would qualify - both mental and physical difficulties are included.
“I care for my disabled husband, I can’t leave him on his own.”
We see a lot of people in this position. Unfortunately you wouldn’t be able to qualify for NHS funding yourself, but we’d be happy to see you privately. If we’re testing the person in your care for an eye examination at the same time, then we’d be happy to offer a discount on the cost of your examination - please ask us for details.
“There aren’t any buses that run near my house.”
Transport difficulties on their own don’t qualify, so unfortunately, you wouldn’t be able to qualify for NHS funding. Your examination would need to be private - ask us for details.
